Holding the backswing too long or not long enough means under/overswinging. Numerous control factors within the backswing change the trajectory of each shot. Simple enough, but this is where things get complicated. Pulling straight down on the stick puts the player's club along that track. A handy white arc around the golfer indicates the ideal backswing form. Tiger Woods 13 demands much more on the green, fairway, or tee. In past years, accounting for the lean of the green and smacking the ball as hard as instructed guaranteed a perfect putt. Every subtle gesture during a swing affects where the ball goes, so the how and why of each shot falls square on the player's shoulders. Pre-set shot types and shot meters don't exist anymore. Left stick movement dictates 100% of how a shot behaves. My “Mass Effect” story is probably very different from yours, and I love that.Total Swing Control is far and away the most meaningful addition to the PGA Tour series since it joined this generation of consoles. With that said, it's been a treat to encounter old characters from the “Mass Effect” franchise and see how my past decisions have made differences in the game world. The action is serviceable and the story has its moments, but I find myself zoning out as I run through a succession of cramped levels mowing down waves of generic soldiers and aliens. I was a devoted fan of the first two “Mass Effect” games but the third (and final) chapter just isn't doing it for me. In my personal time I've been slogging through “Mass Effect 3” (Xbox 360 version) and I'm a little shocked that I still haven't beaten the game to see its much-maligned ending. That's about it for new material this week. It's rare to see historical air combat games on consoles and I'm very eager to get my hands of “Birds of Steel.” If it sounds like your kind of game, I would also recommend 2009's “IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey,” (360, PS3 rated Teen), which did a fantastic job in offering simulation- or arcade-style WWII action. You can play the game like an unforgiving simulator with realistic controls and flight conditions, or tone it down for a fun, arcade-style experience. “Birds of Steel” seems to be very accessible. You can take on missions from historic military campaigns, play with others in co-op mode or battle online in 16-player matches. “Birds of Steel” (360, PS3 rated Teen) offers heaps of World War II air combat with more than 100 authentic planes ranging from the iconic to the obscure. Now that that's out of the way, I want to spotlight a recent release that sounds perfect for aviation buffs. To mix things up, you can use a City Creator to design your own tracks. You join a street racing gang and compete with exotic cars in a host of urban environments. This newest installment in the venerable racing series emphasizes a lot of flashy destruction effects in the game's cars and tracks, with the ability to smash open new paths to victory. If you're interested in online competition, “PGA Tour 13” lets you create or join Country Clubs with other players, which allows you to earn currency that speeds up the process of unlocking downloadable courses.įor auto racing fans we have “Ridge Racer Unbounded” (360, PS3 rated Teen). Then you get a chance to play into the future in pursuit of a 19th major championship to break Jack Nicklaus' record. It starts with Tiger as a toddler practicing in his backyard and runs through his accomplishments as a teen and young adult before moving to the present era. The Legacy Challenge is thorough, to say the least. One of the more interesting features is the Tiger Legacy Challenge, a new mode that lets you relive and play through just about all of the milestones in Woods' golf career. This year's edition includes revamped swing controls, new courses, and support for the Xbox 360's Kinect, which translates your body movement into the game and enables voice commands. ![]() “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13” (360, PS3 rated Everyone) is the latest release in the celebrated annual golf franchise. Not much happening this week as far as new games, but you still have a few options.
